NATIONAL GRADUATE SURVEY

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) is coordinating the undertaking of the 2021 National Graduate Survey by the Institute for Open Learning (IOL), University of Namibia (UNAM), the International University of Management (IUM) and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). The purpose of the Survey is to gather information on the current employment and economic status of IOL, UNAM, IUM and NUST graduates. Furthermore, the main objectives of the survey are to assess the quality of higher education; its external efficiency, and help to explore strategies for its improvement to effectively contribute to socio-economic development.

Therefore, all IOL graduates who completed their studies in the years 2017 and 2018, are invited to participate in the 2021 National Graduate Survey. The data collected will be treated with strict confidentiality and will not be used for anything other than for purposes of this study. Additionally, the results will be published without compromising individual privacy and identification.

Your participation in this study will be highly appreciated as the results from the survey will provide valuable insights for higher education policymakers, researchers, academics and administrators. This will ultimately enhance the overall performance of the education sector.

What are Tracer Studies?

‘Graduate Surveys’ or ‘Tracer Studies’ describe a standard survey (in written form) of graduates from higher education institutions, which take place after graduation. They are a means of tracking graduates to find out what they are doing with the education and training they received. Common topics covered in tracer studies include questions on study progress, the transition to work, work entrance, job and career, use of learned competencies and current occupation.

A Quality Assurance Tool

One of the requirements for quality management in higher education is the consideration of different perspectives when trying to assure quality of teaching and learning. In this context, a graduate survey represents an inclusive tool for incorporating the ‘points of view’ of graduates.

Why are Tracer Studies important?

Tracer studies are important for the following reasons:

  • To find out what happened to graduates after they completed their studies;
  • To find out if they are employed, self-employed or whether they are still looking for jobs;
  • To find out if their studies prepare them well for the workplace;
  • To find out if graduates use the knowledge and skills they have learned during their studies; and
  • To use graduates’ feedback to improve the quality of the study programmes and more specific, to revise the curricular, if necessary.

The tracer studies conducted by the higher education institutions (IOL, IUM, UNAM and NUST) form part of a national collaborative project, NAMTRACE (Namibia Tracer Studies), coordinated by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

How will the findings of this study be used?

The findings are used in different areas of higher education development, as well as to improve services provided by the higher education institutions.

Who should participate?

All graduates who completed their studies in year 2017 and 2018 from IOL, UNAM, IUM and NUST are invited to participate.
