Student Focus October

In my 40s, as a single mother of two little ones, I found myself drowning in the struggles of unemployment and the financial burden of furthering my education. When COVID-19 hit, everything crumbled — I got retrenched, lost my sense of stability, and almost lost my hope. But instead of giving up, I decided that if life wasn’t going to give me a break, I would create one for myself.

Enrolling in a higher qualification was never just about career growth; it was about survival — about rewriting my story. But let me tell you, the road was rough. Money was always tight, and the siblings who once promised to support me? When I needed them most, they were nowhere to be found. There were months when I had to choose between paying for my studies or making sure my kids had what they needed.

And just when I thought life couldn’t throw anything more at me, I lost my mother — the one person who had stepped in to help pay for my studies when everyone else went silent. Losing her broke me. The emotional toll was unbearable. There were days when I questioned whether I had the strength to keep going.

Through it all, I found comfort in God and in remembering the end goal. I had to remind myself every single day why I started. This journey has taught me so much about people — about who my true friends and family really are. Some disappeared when things got tough, but others stood by me, even in the darkest moments.

And don’t even get me started on the struggles with technology! The internet would decide to trip just as I was about to submit an assignment. I’d find myself running to another location, heart racing, praying I could upload my work before time ran out. And when it came to exams? I learned the hard way — after a few breakdowns — to upload my answers as I completed them, because deadlines don’t care about internet issues.

But you know what? I didn’t give up. Through all the tears, the exhaustion, and the moments where quitting felt like the only way out, I kept going. Because I knew this was just the beginning. If God wills, this qualification won’t be my last.

I dream of earning more, of finally securing a future where I don’t have to struggle just to survive. Life tested me, but I chose to rise. And I will keep rising.
